Blending oils lets you adjust texture to suit your skin, hair and the season. Want something lighter than almond for summer, or richer for winter? Mix. No special equipment needed: just a clean, dry bottle (dark glass is best), and the ratios below.
How blending works
Think of each oil as a point on a scale from light to rich: apricot (lightest), almond (middle) and walnut (richest). Blending moves you along that scale. More apricot makes a blend lighter and faster to absorb; more walnut makes it richer and longer-lasting on the skin.
Before you blend
'Parts' can be any measure: drops, teaspoons or capfuls, as long as you use the same one for each oil.
1. The light face blend
2 parts apricot + 1 part almond. Light and quick to settle, with a little more comfort than apricot alone. Two or three drops at night. Ideal for normal and combination skin. See how to choose a face oil.
2. The everyday body oil
Almond on its own, or 3 parts almond + 1 part apricot for an even lighter feel in summer. Apply to damp skin after your shower. See body oil after shower.
3. The winter body oil
2 parts almond + 1 part walnut. Richer and more cushioning for dry shins, elbows and knees in cold weather. Part of our winter skin care routine.
4. The pre-wash hair treatment
1 part almond + 1 part walnut for thick or dry hair, or 2 parts almond + 1 part apricot for fine hair. Warm, apply, leave for an hour, then shampoo twice. Our hair oiling guide explains the technique.
5. The overnight hand and cuticle oil
1 part almond + 2 parts walnut. Rich enough to work overnight. Massage into cuticles and hands before bed, and wear cotton gloves if you can. See cuticle oil.
Bonus: the massage blend
3 parts almond + 1 part apricot. Silky with good glide, and not too heavy. Perfect for our almond oil body massage.
Storing your blends
A blend lasts only as long as its most delicate oil, and walnut is the most delicate of the three. Store blends somewhere cool and dark, and make fresh batches every few weeks. See how to store natural oils.
